Hip hop is a genre which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted.

Hip-hop first became popular in the 1970s. In 1973, Kool DJ Herc was the first DJ to merely repeat the rhythm of a funk, soul, or disco composition rather than playing the entire piece and combining two separate beats (so-called beatjuggling).
Rapper's Delight demonstrated that there was money to be made in hip-hop, and the music industry's attention shifted to rap (the term "hip-hop" was still uncommon at the time). Blondie's song Rapture, which became a #1 success in the United States and is regarded as one of the first rap songs by a white artist, also had an extended rap passage and helped establish hip-hop in the music business.
